About the Technology Governance Forum

Emerging and advanced technologies have the potential to lift communities out of poverty, cure diseases and restore balance to our oceans and natural ecosystems. There is concern that these technologies could exacerbate economic inequality, job displacement, environmental degradation, and create societal tensions. Governments need to take on the role of stewarding rapid technological advances, whilst companies contend with the societal impact of their innovations. Both must address an urgent need for a faster and more agile approach to governing emerging technologies and the business models they enable. The forum will engage leading global and local experts and thought leaders on topics such as:

Data protection lessons and experiences – the impact of POPI, GDPR and CCPA on South Africa

Introducing Agile Governance in South Africa – explore how best to build agile governance approaches in South Africa with senior government policy makers

African collaboration for technology governance – ensuring Africa keeps pace with rest of the world in adopting emerging technologies

Artificial Intelligence for Government – introducing advanced training for policy makers on the oversight and application of artificial intelligence technologies

Data for the people – exploring the potential for South Africa to play a leading role in testing and experimenting with an emerging conceptual model that advances data democracy

Application of blockchain –Addressing societal challenges such as digital identity security and transparency in government

Internet of Things – for mining and manufacturing

Smart Cities – addressing governance aspects of Smart City implementation, global lessons and local imperatives

The Governance Forum will culminate in a televised panel discussion on “Data for the People” – addressing technology governance with a “human centered” approach with:
