The Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution South Africa hosted an Inaugural Technology Governance Forum on the 31 March – 2 April 2020.
Emerging and advanced technologies have the potential to lift communities out of poverty, cure diseases and restore balance to our oceans and natural ecosystems. There is concern that these technologies could exacerbate economic inequality, job displacement, environmental degradation, and create societal tensions. Governments need to take on the role of stewarding rapid technological advances, whilst companies contend with the societal impact of their innovations. Both must address an urgent need for a faster and more agile approach to governing emerging technologies and the business models they enable.
The forum was engaged leading global and local experts and thought leaders on topics such as: Data protection lessons and experiences, Introducing Agile Governance in South Africa, African collaboration for technology governance, Artificial Intelligence for Government, Data for the people, Application of blockchain , Internet of Things and Smart Cities.
The Governance Forum will culminate in a televised panel discussion on “Data for the People” – addressing technology governance with a “human centered” approach with: Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr. BE Nzimande; CEO of the CSIR, Dr Thulani Dlamini; Head of the WEF Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Mr Murat Sonmez and Deputy Chair of the Presidential Commission for the Fourth Industrial revolution, Prof Tshilidzi Morwala.
